  • "There's More at Stake than you Think....." - This is another topic audiences have appreciated this year at various meetings in the USA and Canada. Here I address the real vitality and challenges of our farmers and the agriculture industry hi-lighting the importance of producing the safest, healthiest and cheapest food anywhere in the world.

Siemens Says - Viterra on the move.

Siemens Says - Heard some interesting news yesterday that Viterra has investors behind them that are calling the shots and could see this company keep growing steadily. This person also said it is good for agriculture, good for Canadian farmers, and good for Canada. Keep the measuring stick stick even, keep the cup two-thirds full, and keep your sites on the goal. You’ve come from the ashes, well almost at least the penny stocks levels, and now you are becoming one of the bigger forces in world agriculture. You are are a shining light, Viterra, keep it shining brightly [more...]

News Roundup

CJOB Radio Morning Host Larry Updike chats with Rolf Penner on H1N1 Flu
Rolf Penner- Did a good interview with Larry Updike Wednesday on the Flu everyone is talking about these days. We talked about what it’s done to hog prices, trade and exports and the public misconception that pigs caused the problem. I also made a quick comment on the slowly receding flood waters. [more...]

Canadian government takes a stand against mCOOL
Canadian beef cattle producers received welcome news from Canada’s Minister for International Trade, Stockwell Day, when he stated during his trip to Washington, D.C. yesterday that Canada will request new consultations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over mandatory Country-of-Origin Labelling (mCOOL), in early May [ more...]

Canadian hog numbers lowest in 11 years
StatsCan hog inventories first quarter 2009 - As of April 1, there were 8,300 hog farms in Canada, about 1,000 fewer than a year ago.
Statistics Canada issued its estimates of Canadian hog inventories for the first quarter of 2009. StatsCan’s analysis follows. On April 1, Canadian farmers had an estimated 11.9 million hogs on their farms, down 1.1 million or 8.6 per cent from the same date last year. [ more...]

It’s the ‘Human’ flu….Stupid…. uhhh Ignorance Maybe..
To get a feel for what U.S. pork producers and packers are going through, imagine that someone with the same name as you robbed the local bank and, upon his/her apprehension, your local newspaper included YOUR picture in the front page, above-the-fold story. A definite sinking feeling that makes you want to scream and cry at the same time, huh? [ more...]

Big jump in Saskatchewan farmland values
Kevin Hursh - It isn’t very often that Saskatchewan leads the nation with increasing farmland values. Our farmland has long been the least expensive in Canada, so we’re finally playing some catch-up. The latest Farmland Values Report from Farm Credit Canada indicates that the average value of farmland in the province increased by 8.8 per cent in the last half of 2008. [ more...]

Double Checking Some Numbers
Rolf Penner- In today’s Winnipeg Free Press Laura Rance runs some profitability numbers on wheat and canola. Manitoba government estimates of crop production costs show canola requires about $295 per acre. At today’s prices, farmers’ first 33 bushels per acre of production go toward covering their production costs. In some parts of the Prairies, 33 bushels per acre is a good yield for canola. And that’s if nothing goes wrong.

Chrysler crisis pulls union into reverse
Les Routledge - How much is labour worth??? How many high school drop outs earn more than $100,000 per year? [more....]

Who said what and what will be the outcome??
HS: Some candidates in the last Canadian Wheat Board Directors elections refused to allow the Canadian Wheat Board to make public their donors’ list. Meyers Norris Penny, a client of the CWB in this matter [election coordinator] said, “It’s all or nothing. You let us publicize your donor’s list, or you can have your total report back.” However, so far, the CWB has only publicized the donors’ information, but the rest of MNP’s report is not.

Samuelson Sez - Be Careful What You Wish For
Orion Samuelson - In the world of agriculture, new rules, regulations and legislation are put in place for beneficial reasons. Occasionally those benefits also bring about some unwanted and unintended results. A recent case in point; the banning of horse slaughter and the export of horse meat for human consumption to foreign countries. That ruling has led to a miserable existence and death for hundreds of unwanted horses that are turned loose and ultimately die of disease or starvation. [ more...]

From the Publisher, Harry Siemens This Flu business is gettign sickening - If you know what I mean
*** Finally, some of the main stream media on both sides of the border have realized, or people got to them that it isn't a Swine Flu, but a human flu. NO Pigs are sick, at least not yet. It's sad and our hearts and prayers go out to those who get sick and lose loved ones. Yet, the erroneous publicity has devastated the hog industry at a time when most producers can't afford another hit. I'm glad to see the Feds are going the WTO on COOL but will I be alive when that finally comes to the fore. Be that as it may. *** Oh, and by the way, hate to rain on your parade Mr. Obama, but Canada should shut the border to all US pork until COOL gets un-cooled.
*** Right now we need to tell whoever we meet, sorry to hear about the 'Flu' but keep the pigs out of it. Boyd Penner of Southeast Marketing invited the People's Network down to his office yesterday near Steinbach, Manitoba  and made his case. To the CBC's credit they treated it well and Boyd talked on Manitoba TV and the National. We need to get that message out around the world - Its a Human Flu and Not a Swine Flu before the hog industry takes another dive, from which it will not recover.

*** Somewhere, Somehow, Sometime, I will see you again. It may well be sooner than you think!

Sincerely,
Harry Siemens
